Get startedOur detector fetches the public HTML, CSS, and JavaScript of the URL you provide, then uses fingerprinting rules to identify the theme and any installed extensions. Most detections complete in under 2 seconds.
RevealTheme's Shopify theme detector identifies the active theme on any Shopify storefront in under two seconds. Paste any Shopify store URL to instantly see the theme name, theme version, store ID, theme ID, and the store's render region. The detector uses Shopify's own JavaScript globals — the same data Shopify itself exposes to make sites work — so detection accuracy is essentially 100% on any live Shopify store. Works on both Shopify-hosted myshopify.com domains and stores on custom domains.
Shopify is a hosted eCommerce platform that powers over 4 million online stores worldwide. Each store runs a 'theme' that controls the visual design, product page layout, cart behavior, and checkout flow. Shopify theme detection differs from WordPress theme detection because Shopify themes don't expose file paths in the HTML the way WordPress themes do. Instead, every Shopify store embeds a JavaScript object called 'BOOMR' (Boomerang, Shopify's RUM performance library) which contains the theme name, version, and store ID. RevealTheme's Shopify detector parses this object. Because BOOMR is required for Shopify's own analytics, it's present on every live Shopify store — making detection effectively universal. The detector also identifies the Shopify CDN region serving the store, which can help diagnose performance issues.
Yes. Whether the store is on store.myshopify.com or its own custom domain like brand.com, the BOOMR JavaScript object is identical, so detection works on both.
A small percentage of Shopify stores use custom themes built by agencies that don't include a theme name in the BOOMR data. In those cases we confirm the site is on Shopify but can't extract a specific theme name.
Indirectly. If the detected theme name matches a name from the Shopify Theme Store (Dawn, Sense, Refresh, Crave, Studio, Origin, Ride, Colorblock, Craft, Spotlight, Publisher, Trade, Local), it's a free Shopify theme. Any other name is typically a paid third-party theme or custom theme.
Yes. Shopify Plus uses the same theme architecture as standard Shopify, so detection works identically.
The theme name is what the store owner set in their Shopify admin — sometimes that's the original theme name (e.g., 'Dawn'), sometimes it's a custom name they chose (e.g., 'Holiday 2025 v2'). We show whatever the store owner saved.
