WordPress tag pages aggregate posts sharing a tag. By default, they have minimal content beyond the post list. The default produces thin pages that rarely rank.

With specific configuration, tag pages can become substantive content that ranks for niche queries. The configuration determines the outcome.

The default tag page

The tag name as the title. A list of post excerpts. Pagination if there are many posts.

No introduction, no curated context, no additional content. The page is auto-generated.

For tags with substantial post counts (10+ relevant posts), the post list itself has some value. For tags with 1-3 posts, the page is thin.

The substantial tag page

Add a description to important tags. WordPress's tag editor includes a description field that themes can display.

The description becomes intro content that turns the page from auto-archive to curated topic page.

Yoast SEO and Rank Math can also add SEO-specific titles and meta descriptions for tag pages.

The thin tag handling

Tags with 1-3 posts probably shouldn't be indexable. The thin archives dilute the site's overall quality signal.

Noindex thin tag pages. The SEO plugins can do this conditionally based on post count.

Better: don't create tags that won't accumulate posts. Tag discipline reduces thin tag problem at the source.

The tag vs category distinction

Categories represent broad sections; should be limited in number and used consistently.

Tags represent specific topics; accumulate organically as content covers various subtopics.

For most sites, the tags that have substantive archives are the ones worth indexing. The tags with 1-2 posts can be deindexed.

The auto-deindexing pattern

SEO plugins support rules like: noindex tag pages with fewer than 5 posts. The rule automates the thin-tag handling.

The threshold is configurable. Choose based on the site's content volume and tag patterns.

The honest framing

Tag page SEO is mostly about handling thin tags appropriately and elevating substantive tags. The defaults often produce poor results; conscious configuration improves them.

For sites with many tags, the audit is worth doing. The cleanup affects how Google perceives the site's quality.
