The post excerpt appears in archive listings, RSS feeds, social share previews, and search snippets. The excerpt that gets generated affects how the content is perceived across many contexts.
WordPress generates excerpts automatically by default, but the automatic excerpt is often suboptimal. Conscious excerpt strategy produces better results.
When no manual excerpt is set, WordPress generates one from the first 55 words of the post content. The cutoff happens at a word boundary; the result gets an ellipsis.
The default works for content where the first 55 words are representative. It fails for content where the opening is throat-clearing or where the excerpt would benefit from different framing than the article.
Every post can have a manual excerpt set. The excerpt field is in the post editor (under post-level settings).
The manual excerpt is what gets used wherever an excerpt is needed. The article body is unaffected.
The pattern that works: write a 1-2 sentence summary that's compelling out of context. The excerpt should convey what the article is about and why someone should read it.
When the post is shared on social media, the Open Graph description (typically pulled from the meta description, with excerpt as fallback) appears in the share preview.
The excerpt that works for social sharing: compelling enough to drive clicks, concise enough to display fully, clear enough to set expectations.
The article's first sentence often isn't the best social share copy. The article's intent statement may be better.
The meta description (often the excerpt by default) appears in search snippets. The snippet drives click-through.
The excerpt that works for search: includes the topic keywords naturally, signals the article's value, fits within the snippet character limit.
Archive pages show post excerpts as previews. The excerpt that works here: gives enough information to decide whether to click, doesn't duplicate the title.
For archives showing many posts, scannable excerpts matter. Long excerpts produce visual clutter; short clear excerpts produce browsable archives.
SEO plugins set the meta description separately from the post excerpt. The plugin's meta description is used for SEO snippets; the post excerpt is used elsewhere.
The pattern: set both, with potentially different content. The meta description is optimized for search snippets; the post excerpt is optimized for general use.
For sites where they should be the same, the SEO plugin can pull from the excerpt automatically. The single field controls both.
Excerpt generation is a small but consequential detail. Default automatic excerpts produce inconsistent results; manual excerpts produce intentional results.
The investment per post is small (30 seconds to write a thoughtful excerpt). The cumulative effect across hundreds of posts is significant.
For sites with disciplined excerpt practice, archives, social shares, and search snippets all benefit. For sites without it, the inconsistency shows.
