Nonprofit websites have donation as a primary conversion goal. The donation page is where visitors convert to donors; its design and operation matter substantially.

The patterns that produce higher donation conversion are specific. They balance ease of giving with the trust-building that supports decision-making.

The donation amount presentation

Suggested amounts as buttons. $25, $50, $100, $250, with the impact of each amount described.

"Other" amount field for donors who want a different amount.

The suggested amounts shouldn't all be small (anchors donors low) or all large (intimidates).

The impact framing

What does $50 do? "Provides one week of meals for a family" connects the abstract amount to concrete impact.

The framing matters for emotional connection. Donors respond to specific impact more than to "support our mission."

The recurring vs one-time choice

Offer both. Many donors prefer recurring (sustaining membership); many prefer one-time. The choice should be visible.

Recurring is generally more valuable for the organization (predictable revenue). Some donor-facing language can encourage it.

The form simplicity

Minimum required fields: amount, donor name, email, payment info. Each additional required field is a reason to abandon.

Optional fields can be: address (for tax receipt), phone, message to the organization, employer (for matching gifts).

The payment processing

Trust-building matters. Recognized payment processors (Stripe, PayPal) signal security.

The form should make security visible: SSL indicator, payment processor logos, brief assurance about how data is handled.

The donation receipt

Immediate email confirming the donation. The receipt should be: clear about what was donated, useful for tax purposes if applicable, warm in tone.

The receipt is also the first communication after the donation. Set the tone for the ongoing relationship.

The plugin options

GiveWP: dedicated WordPress donation plugin. Free core with paid add-ons.

Charitable: similar functionality, different vendor.

Donorbox: external service integrated via embed.

Stripe direct integration via Stripe's documentation.

The honest framing

Donation pages affect nonprofit revenue directly. Small improvements compound; an extra few percent conversion across a year produces meaningful revenue.

For nonprofits operating WordPress sites, investing in donation page optimization is high-leverage work.
