Traffic without conversion is wasted. Conversion rate optimization (CRO) improves the percentage of visitors who take desired actions: subscribe, purchase, contact, sign up.

The basic CRO approaches produce measurable improvement without requiring expensive tools or extensive expertise.

The starting baseline

Measure current conversion rates. For each conversion action, the rate is: completed actions / total visitors.

Newsletter signup: typically 1-3% on content sites; higher on dedicated landing pages.

Lead form completion: 2-5% on relevant pages.

E-commerce purchase: 1-3% sitewide; higher on specific product pages.

The baseline tells you where you are and what improvement might look like.

The high-leverage areas

The call-to-action button. Text, color, prominence all affect click rate. Testing variations produces measurable improvement.

The value proposition above the fold. What does the visitor get? Why now? The framing affects whether they engage.

The form fields. Each required field is a reason to abandon. Reduce to essentials.

The trust signals. Testimonials, badges, guarantees, customer logos all support conversion.

The page speed. Slow pages convert worse. Speed work is CRO work.

The testing approach

A/B testing tools (VWO, Optimizely, Google Optimize alternatives) test variations. The test runs until statistical significance is reached.

For low-traffic sites, A/B testing isn't practical (the test would take too long to reach significance). Instead: make educated changes, measure cumulative effect over months.

For high-traffic sites, A/B testing produces faster learning. The investment in testing infrastructure is justified.

The page-level optimization

Focus CRO on high-value pages: homepage, top landing pages, conversion-funnel pages. Optimizing these produces more impact than optimizing low-traffic pages.

The 20/80 rule: 20% of pages typically produce 80% of conversions. Focus the work proportionally.

The honest framing

CRO is incremental work with cumulative impact. Each small improvement adds up; over months, conversion rates can double.

The investment is moderate; the return is multiplicative on existing traffic. Sites that ignore CRO leave significant revenue on the table.
