Membership sites lose members in the first 30 days at higher rates than later. The members who churn early often didn't engage enough to perceive value. A structured onboarding sequence reduces this churn.

Day 1: welcome and first action

Welcome email immediately after signup. Brief, warm, with a single clear next action.

The action should be quick to complete and provide immediate value. "Read this first guide" or "join the introduction channel" or "watch this 5-minute overview."

Day 3: deeper engagement

Email suggesting next steps. Now that they've had a few days, what's the next meaningful action?

Often this is community-related: introduce yourself, ask a question, join a discussion.

Day 7: first significant value

The member should have consumed something substantial by day 7. The onboarding ensures they have.

Email checking in: "Have you tried X yet? Here's why it matters."

Day 14: rhythm establishment

By day 14, the member should know the membership's rhythm: when content arrives, where to engage, what to expect.

Email reinforcing the rhythm: "Just a reminder that we publish weekly on Tuesdays. Here's what's coming this month."

Day 30: completion check

Has the member found value? If yes, they continue naturally. If not, the membership may not fit.

Email asking: how is the membership working for you? The feedback identifies fit issues and provides intervention opportunity.

The personalization

The sequence works better when personalized. Different members signed up for different reasons; the onboarding can address their specific interests.

Segment by signup reason or initial actions; tailor the sequence accordingly.

The community integration

New members should connect to other members. Specific introductions or curated welcome to community spaces accelerate the connection.

The community connection is one of the strongest retention factors. Onboarding that builds it produces longer-tenured members.

The honest framing

The first 30 days determine the next 30 months for membership sites. Investment in onboarding produces compounding returns through retention.

Sites without structured onboarding leave value on the table. The members are doing the work of figuring out how to engage; some succeed; many don't.
