Membership sites benefit from tracking engagement. Members who engage stay; members who disengage churn. The tracking identifies at-risk members for intervention.

The engagement signals

Login frequency. Members who haven't logged in for weeks are at risk.

Content consumption. Members who don't access content are disengaging.

Community participation. Members who don't post or interact are detaching.

Email engagement. Members who don't open emails or click links are losing interest.

The signals together produce an engagement picture.

The risk thresholds

Define what constitutes at-risk for your operation. Examples:

No login in 30 days.

No content consumption in 60 days.

No community participation in 45 days.

The thresholds depend on your membership rhythm. Daily-engagement memberships have shorter thresholds; weekly-or-less memberships have longer.

The intervention pattern

When a member becomes at-risk, intervene before churn happens. Possible interventions:

Personal email checking in: how is the membership working?

Re-engagement content: a specific resource that might reignite interest.

Community connection: introduction to other active members.

Survey to understand the disengagement cause.

Not every at-risk member can be saved. The interventions save some; that some is the return on tracking investment.

The technical implementation

WordPress plugins can track engagement: LMS plugins for course consumption, membership plugins for login frequency, community plugins for participation.

Custom code or external services (Mailchimp's engagement tracking) supplement plugin data.

The integration produces a unified engagement view per member.

The reporting

The engagement data should be accessible to whoever can act on it. The community manager or member success person needs to see who's at risk.

A dashboard showing: total members, at-risk count, recent disengagement, recent re-engagement.

The honest framing

Engagement tracking is operational work that supports retention. The tracking itself doesn't save members; the interventions based on tracking do.

For membership sites where retention matters (which is most), the investment in tracking and intervention infrastructure pays off in lifetime value.
