WordPress Excerpt Length: What Works For Different Contexts

Excerpts appear in many contexts: archive listings on the site, RSS feeds, email newsletters, social share previews, search engine snippets. Each context has different length expectations. A single excerpt has to work across all of them.

The constraint forces clarity. Saying what matters in 150 characters requires focus that longer excerpts let you avoid.

The writing approach

State what the article is about. Direct rather than clever.

Hint at the value proposition. Why read this?

Avoid throat-clearing. Skip "In this article we will discuss..." and just describe the content.

The compact format becomes a writing exercise. Each excerpt is a small piece of copywriting that rewards practice.

The truncation behavior

If the excerpt exceeds the context's limit, truncation happens. The truncation cuts at a word boundary typically, but the visible text becomes incomplete.

The user reads "WordPress caching plugins compared: WP Rocket, LiteSpeed Cache, W3 Total..." and has to guess what came next.

Better to write within the limit so the visible text is complete.
