If you have spent any time researching Google Analytics plugins for WordPress, you have run into both ExactMetrics and MonsterInsights, and you have probably noticed something strange: they look almost identical. The dashboards feel the same. The feature lists read like copies of each other. The pricing is suspiciously close. That is not a coincidence, and understanding why is the fastest way to make this decision.
Both plugins are owned by the same company, Awesome Motive — the team behind WPForms, OptinMonster, SeedProd, and a large chunk of the WordPress commercial ecosystem. MonsterInsights began life as Yoast's "Google Analytics for WordPress" plugin and was acquired and rebranded in 2016. ExactMetrics is the rebranded version of the old "Google Analytics Dashboard for WP" (GADWP), which Awesome Motive picked up a couple of years later.
So you are not choosing between two competing companies fighting for your business. You are choosing between two products from the same parent that share a great deal of underlying code and a near-identical roadmap. This reframes the whole comparison. The real question is not "which one is better built" — they are built to the same standard by overlapping teams — but "which packaging fits my situation."
Universal Analytics was shut off in July 2023, and Google Analytics 4 is the only version that collects data today. Both ExactMetrics and MonsterInsights are fully GA4-native. Both connect to your GA4 property with an OAuth click rather than making you paste a measurement ID into a theme file, and both pull GA4 reports back into your WordPress dashboard so you never have to open the notoriously confusing GA4 interface to see your top pages, traffic sources, or device breakdown.
This is genuinely the main reason people install either plugin. Raw GA4 is powerful but hostile to non-analysts. These plugins translate it into the metrics a publisher or store owner actually checks: which posts are working, where readers come from, and what they do before they leave. If you only care about that, either plugin solves the problem on day one.
Here is where the sibling relationship becomes obvious. Run down the feature lists of the paid tiers and you will see the same capabilities on both sides:
If a specific feature is your deciding factor, check the exact tier it lives in on each product's pricing page before you buy — but in practice, the headline features map one-to-one.
MonsterInsights is the flagship. It has the larger install base (north of 3 million active sites), far more tutorial content, a bigger affiliate and review footprint, and the heavier marketing push. ExactMetrics is the quieter, leaner-branded sibling. For most buyers this only matters in one practical way: when you get stuck and search for "how do I do X," you will find more MonsterInsights walkthroughs. The community gravity is real, even if the software is comparable.
Historically ExactMetrics was pitched as the budget-friendly alternative, and that reputation still drives a lot of the search traffic. As of 2026 the published list prices have largely converged: both run a Plus, Pro, and Agency ladder, with Pro around $199.50/year for five sites and Agency around $399.50/year. Both also publish a free version on WordPress.org that handles basic GA4 connection and core reports.
The catch with both — and this is the part to actually pay attention to — is renewal and launch pricing. Awesome Motive products are famous for steep first-year discounts that snap back to full price on renewal. So do not compare the two on their flashy "today only" banners. Compare the renewal price for the tier that contains the features you need, because that is what you will pay every year after the first. Whichever sibling is running the more aggressive promotion the week you buy is genuinely a legitimate tiebreaker, given how close the products are.
Both free tiers cover the essentials — connect GA4, see a basic dashboard report, enable standard tracking. Neither free version includes eCommerce, forms, or the deeper dimension reports; those are paywalled on both. If you are running a content blog and just want readable traffic numbers inside WP, the free version of either is often enough, and you can upgrade the day you actually need conversion tracking.
A quick myth to kill: neither plugin is meaningfully "lighter" than the other in a way you will feel. The performance cost of any GA plugin comes overwhelmingly from the Google Analytics script it loads on the front end, and that script is the same regardless of which plugin injects it. The plugins themselves add a modest amount of admin-side weight for their dashboards. If page speed is your worry, the lever that matters is whether you defer or conditionally load the analytics script and how aggressively you cache — not which of these two sibling plugins you picked. Both keep their front-end footprint small, and Core Web Vitals (LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200ms) are far more affected by your theme, images, and host than by either plugin.
When two products are this close — same parent, shared lineage, mirrored features, matched pricing tiers — the decision is not about software quality. It comes down to three practical factors:
For most readers — bloggers, small businesses, and store owners who want GA4 made readable — MonsterInsights is the safe default purely because of its larger community and resource ecosystem. ExactMetrics is an equally capable pick, and if it is running the better promotion or simply has the dashboard you prefer, you lose nothing by choosing it. There is no "wrong" sibling here; there is only the one whose price and interface fit you best this month.
